Thanks anon! Sorry this might suck. And orange is the new black is pretty crazy. But the best kind of crazy.
Jennifer groans as the phone on her nightstand buzzes, once, twice, three times. Her eyes blink against the dim light filtering through her bedroom window alerting her groggy mind that it was early. Too early for her phone to be ringing on her damn off day. Right when her hand reached the side table the buzzing stopped and Jennifer flopped back on her pillow. Whatever it was could wait.
She had just gotten comfortable when the buzzing started again. “Fucking damnit,” Jennifer murmured as she snatched the offensive object from the nightstand and pressed the green button without even looking to see who it was. She was too tired.
"This better be fucking good," she said into the receiver, her voice thick with sleep and aggravation.
A familiar chuckle rumbled in her ear followed by a voice that sent a thrill down her spine, “Good morning to you, too, grumpy.”
Nick. Suddenly Jennifer was awake. Wide awake, leaping up into bed and fumbling for her glasses that were also on the side table.
Nick was left for seconds with nothing but rustling in his ear and by the time Jen had her glasses on, sitting up in bed she heard “Hello? Jen? Hello?”
Jen smiled, her heart hammering at the sound of his voice. “Hi, hey, I’m here sorry.”
"There you are. Thought I’d lost you. I don’t have much time—"
Jen cut Nick off. “Face time me.”
"FaceTime me. I need to see you."
Jen hung up the phone without waiting for a response and within seconds received a FaceTime call, Nick’s contact picture lighting up the screen. Jen smiled as she hit accept.
"Hi, sleepy." Nick chuckled as he took in Jen’s appearance, sleepy eyes, crooked glasses, and hair standing up in disarray.
In response Jen yawned.
"I just called to say I miss you." Nick said, scrubbing his hand behind his neck and suddenly Jen felt a lump in her throat.
"Remind me again, Why aren’t you here?" She tried to swallow a sob that was threatening to escape. It had only been a few weeks since she’d seen him, but it felt like months. The distance taking it’s toll.
"Work," Nick sighed and as if on cue someone in the distance called his name and Nick turned around, giving whoever it was a hand signal that he’d be just a second longer.
"Remind me again why we haven’t quit and ran away togeter.
I need you.” She was being needy and pathetic but she didn’t care. She missed him.
"One day." Nick chuckled and Jen frowned. "Look, babe, I really have to go. I just called to say I miss you. And I love you. Dearly."
"I love you too," Jen sighed as her fingertip traced the outline of his face on her screen. It’d been too long.
"I’ll call you back later okay? Unless we wrap too late—"
"I don’t care what time it is." Jen shook her head fiercely. "Whatever time it is, just call me."
Nick laughed. “okay babe. Wait for me, then.”
Jen just smiled, biting her lip slightly before replying, “Always.”
